Introduction: The Journey to Serve the Nation Begins Again
Every year, lakhs of aspirants across India dream of clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination and stepping into roles that shape the destiny of the nation — as an IAS, IPS, or IFS officer. For most of them, that dream needs more than motivation; it needs structure, mentorship, and a proven system of preparation.
Vivechna IAS & Judiciary Academy, one of the leading coaching institutes in Delhi NCR, is proud to announce the launch of its new UPSC Civil Services Foundation Batch, commencing on 6th July 2026 (Monday) at 10:00 AM, under the inspiring theme “The Journey to Serve the Nation.”
This isn’t just another batch — it is a complete ecosystem covering every General Studies subject, Current Affairs, CSAT, Essay, Optional Subjects, answer writing, mentorship, and interview guidance, delivered by experienced faculty in a small-batch, result-oriented environment.
OUR HERITAGE, OUR IDENTITY — The Significance of the Tagline "Our Heritage, Our Identity"
The tagline of this new batch, “OUR HERITAGE, OUR IDENTITY” (Our Heritage, Our Identity), is more than a marketing line — it reflects the very spirit of the Civil Services.
Every civil servant, whether an IAS, IPS, or IFS officer, ultimately becomes a custodian of India’s constitutional values, cultural diversity, and administrative legacy. The tagline reminds aspirants that:
- Heritage shapes understanding — a civil servant who understands India’s history, culture, polity, and diversity administers with greater empathy and context.
- Identity shapes purpose — clearing the UPSC exam is not just about a career; it is about assuming the identity of a public servant committed to nation-building.
- The exam itself tests this philosophy directly — GS Paper I (History, Culture, Geography), the Essay paper, and the Personality Test all repeatedly probe how well a candidate understands and internalizes India’s heritage and their own role in serving
This philosophy is what Vivechna IAS builds into its teaching — not rote learning, but a genuine understanding of India that translates into strong answer writing and a confident interview performanc
Complete Overview of the UPSC Civil Services Examination
Before diving into subject-wise preparation, aspirants must understand the three-stage structure of the exam, as prescribed by the UPSC Official Website.
Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Prelims)
The Prelims is a screening test comprising two objective-type papers:
- General Studies Paper I – covers History, Polity, Geography, Economy, Environment, Science & Technology, and Current Affairs. This paper is used for ranking/merit.
- General Studies Paper II (CSAT) – tests comprehension, logical reasoning, data interpretation, and basic CSAT is qualifying in nature (candidates must score 33%).
Only candidates who clear the Prelims cut-off move on to the Mains. Read our detailed guide on Important Topics for UPSC Prelims 2026 and the Expected UPSC Prelims Cut Off 2026.
Stage 2: Main Examination (Mains)
The Mains is a descriptive, written examination consisting of nine papers:
- Two qualifying language papers (Indian Language and English)
- Essay
- General Studies I – Indian Heritage, Culture, History, Geography of the World and Society
- General Studies II – Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, International Relations
- General Studies III – Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security, Disaster Management
- General Studies IV – Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude
- Two papers on the candidate’s chosen Optional Subject
The Mains is where a candidate’s depth of knowledge, analytical ability, and answer-writing skill are truly tested. See our article on how to Improve Handwriting and Answer Presentation for UPSC Mains.
Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)
Candidates who clear the Mains are called for the Personality Test, conducted by a UPSC board. This is not a test of knowledge alone — it evaluates a candidate’s mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgement, leadership qualities, and moral integrity. It is here that a genuine understanding of one’s “heritage and identity” — one’s roots, values, and vision for public service — becomes decisive.
Detailed Subject-Wise Breakdown: What You Will Study and Why It Matters
Vivechna IAS’s Foundation Batch is designed around comprehensive coverage of every subject tested at Prelims, Mains, and Interview stage.
1. Indian History (Ancient, Medieval & Modern)
History builds the foundation for GS Paper I and forms a significant chunk of Prelims questions. It covers the Indus Valley Civilization, Vedic Age, Mauryan and Gupta empires, the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughal era, and the freedom struggle. Understanding history is essential to interpreting India’s institutions and social evolution today. Explore our comprehensive resource on Ancient Indian History for UPSC.
2. Indian Polity & Constitution
Polity is the single most scoring and consistent area across Prelims and Mains (GS Paper II). Aspirants study the Constitution, Fundamental Rights and Duties, the Union and State Executive, Parliament, Judiciary, Centre-State relations, and constitutional bodies. A strong grip on Polity is non-negotiable — it also underpins governance-based Mains answers. Read our tips on How to Remember the Constitution of India.
3. Geography (Indian & World)
Geography covers physical, human, and economic geography of India and the world, along with mapping skills. It explains the “why” behind news events — monsoons, disasters, resource distribution, and geopolitics — making it critical for both Prelims and GS Paper I Mains.
4. Indian Economy
Economy is tested extensively in Prelims and GS Paper III Mains. Topics include national income, fiscal and monetary policy, banking, inflation, budgeting, and economic reforms. Aspirants must also follow the Economic Survey and Union Budget closely each year.
5. Environment & Ecology
A high-scoring, fast-growing segment of Prelims, Environment & Ecology covers biodiversity, climate change, conservation efforts, international protocols, and environmental legislation. It frequently overlaps with current affairs, such as our analysis of the El Niño Threat and India’s Climate Resilience.
6. Science & Technology
This subject demands application-based understanding rather than rote memorization — covering space technology, biotechnology, defence tech, IT, and emerging innovations. Our detailed piece on Space Technology in India for UPSC (ISRO, Chandrayaan-3) is a useful starting point.
7. International Relations
Tested in GS Paper II, this covers India’s bilateral and multilateral relations, international organisations, and foreign policy. Aspirants are trained to link current global events to India’s strategic interests — essential for both Mains answers and interview discussions.
8. Internal Security
A core component of GS Paper III, Internal Security covers terrorism, insurgency, border management, cyber security, and the role of security forces. Vivechna IAS runs a dedicated UPSC Internal Security Foundation Course to strengthen this often-underprepared area.
9. Disaster Management
Also part of GS Paper III, this subject covers the disaster management cycle — prevention, mitigation, response, and rehabilitation — along with institutional frameworks like the NDMA. Explore our specialised Disaster Management for UPSC batch.
10. Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude
GS Paper IV is unique — it tests a candidate’s values through case studies rather than factual recall. Topics include foundational values of civil services, emotional intelligence, probity in governance, and ethical dilemmas. This paper is directly tied to the “identity” a civil servant must carry into public life.
11. Current Affairs
Current Affairs threads through every paper — Prelims, all four GS Mains papers, the Essay, and the Interview. Vivechna IAS provides Daily News Analysis, monthly current affairs magazines, and weekly editorial discussions. Check our Current Affairs Monthly Magazine for a sample of our coverage depth.
12. Essay Writing
The Essay paper (250 marks) tests a candidate’s ability to structure thought, express clarity, and connect abstract themes to real-world governance and society — often drawing directly on India’s heritage, culture, and values.
13. CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test)
CSAT tests comprehension, logical reasoning, decision-making, and basic numeracy. While qualifying in nature, many capable aspirants are eliminated each year due to poor CSAT strategy. Our guide on UPSC CSAT Prelims Strategy: Mistakes to Avoid helps aspirants avoid common pitfalls.
14. Optional Subjects
Candidates must choose one Optional Subject for two Mains papers (worth 500 marks combined) — a significant differentiator in final rank. Vivechna IAS offers full coverage of popular optionals including Law, Philosophy, and PSIR. If you’re unsure which optional suits you, read How to Choose Your UPSC Optional Subject: A Complete Guide or explore all Optional Subject courses.
